TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Sunday found the bodies of an elderly man and woman inside the apartment they shared in Koto Ward, reports NHK (Nov. 23).

At around 4:30 p.m., officers from the Tokyo Wangan Police Station entered the fourth floor apartment, located in the Tatsumi area, and discovered the decaying remains of a man, 81, and that of his 71-year-old sister near a table in the living room.

The body of the man was clothed only in a diaper while the woman was wearing underwear.

Since neither body exhibited sings of external injuries, police suspect that both people died of natural causes. The time of death is believed to have been over one month ago.

Police entered the residence after a person living on the same floor told police that the man, who suffered from dementia, had not been seen since June and his sister since last month.

The pair had not paid a 600-yen monthly service fee charged to residents of the building in September and October.
