TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 57-year-old woman who admits to killing her father and hiding his body in storage for over a year, reports TV Asahi (Sep. 15).

On Sunday, Kazue Iwata, turned herself in at a police station in Koto Ward. The suspect told officers that she had strangled her 87-year-old father, Kazuo, in June of last year and hid his body in an empty room.

Police later found a skeletonized corpse inside a room on the first floor of the suspect’s residence in the Fukagawa area.

Iwata, who has been charged with abandoning a corpse, admits to the allegations. “I thought I could no longer hide it,” the suspect is quoted by police in explaining the reason for her surrender.

Iwata shared the second floor of the residence with her father and oldest son. In explaining her father’s disappearance, the suspect told her son that he had become sick and was hospitalized. She used deodorant cover the smell of the decomposing body.

Police are now working to confirm the identity of the corpse and apply murder charges to Iwata.
