At 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday night, a guard found Wataru Akaishi, 49, hanging from the bars of his cell at the Kyomachi Prison and Correctional Facility in Chuo Ward. In creating a noose, Akaishi had tied his underwear to the bars.
Akaishi was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died two days later. The cause of death was determined to be suffocation.
In of May of last year, Akaishi received an 18-year prison sentence for murdering a third-year high school.
