KANAGAWA (TR) – Kanagawa Prefectural Police revealed on Friday that an American male in custody in the dumping of a women’s corpse in a bay in Miura City very likely planned the crime beforehand, reports TBS News (Aug. 7).
Police have confirmed that Gregory Gumo, a 41-year-old marketer and promoter in the entertainment industry, bought a rope and plastic sheet identical to those used in the dumping of the body of 42-year-old Mariko Akitaya.
On the morning of July 29, the body of Akitaya, a contract employee in the cosmetics industry, was found wrapped in a brown plastic sheet and floating about 20 meters off the coast in Koajiro Bay. A towing rope had been used to attach the body to a concrete block.
Police utilized an analysis of the evidence and inquiries with vendors to conclude that the items used in the crime are of the same type as those obtained by Gumo. The suspect purchased the equipment prior to the incident, police said.
On Thursday, police accused Gumo of abandoning the body of Akitaya. Investigators are now working to apply murder charges.
With an autopsy conducted on the body revealing a large quantity of water being present in the lungs, the cause of death was determined to be drowning. The estimated time of death was the day before the body was discovered.
With the body showing no signs of injuries, police are considering the possibility that Akitaya had been drugged prior to the incident, according to Yomiuri Television (Aug. 8).

Security camera footage showed Gumo and Akitaya together inside a vehicle traveling in the direction of Atami City on July 27.
During questioning by police prior to his arrest, the suspect admitted that the two had been together but denied involvement in the crime.
Gumo is married and living with his wife and children in Yokohama’s Hodogaya Ward. He became acquainted with Akitaya, a resident of Tokyo’s Meguro Ward, through a dating site.
According to Fuji News Network (Aug. 7), Gumo attempted to travel to the United States on an international flight from Haneda Airport on the day that Akitaya’s body was discovered.
Guess he didn’t want his wife to find out he was cheating and killed her.
What a scumbag! Cheating his wife with another woman. Either the woman was pregnent or she doesn’t want to leave him and that’s where he killed her.
Death penalty is waiting for him.

How can anyone guess this character’s motivation for killing this Japanese woman? How tragic, and this Gumo isn’t very bright. The police were able to locate the store where he apparently purchased the “equipment” used to tie her up to toss her into the cove. What did he use to knock her out? Must have been something strong enough to bring about her unconsciousness long enough to tie her up. Last week a Japanese guy murdered a Japanese girl he met online. They went back to his apartment after a fireworks display and he murders her. Girls, my advice is to stay away from online dating, and if you do meet someone online bring a body guard. This guy is going to prison for a very long time.
Quite simple really. He probably got her pregnant, she didn’t want to get an abortion, and she threatened to tell his wife. So he decided that his only option was to kill her. Nothing original here, really. Sex and the need for gratification has been a thorn in a man’s side since time immemorial. My advice, keep it in you pants guys.
Look at Mr Self-Righteous over here. How do you know the motive? Were you there?
or he is just a psycho. His wife is hot too, but seems he wasn’t content. The dirt bag took a precious life and destroyed the victims family and his own. He has three kids; how do they deal with this psycho’s actions.
Do you understand what the words ‘probably’ and ‘in my opinion’ mean??? That’s exactly what my comment is. And 99 times out of 100, when a married guy offs his mistress it’s because she threatens to expose their affair to his wife. Deal with it! Now I’m bored responding to you, bored…
The only people who deserve any sympathy here are the victim and her family and the suspect’s wife and children. If this guy is guilty, he truly made an insane choice that has left one dead and ruined lives. May punishment be swift and harsh.
Hes a scammer he used to work at gaspanic. And he scam me of money. He could have scam her for money or shes pregnant.
What kind of scam did he pull on you?

Where is your story you posted?
When did he work as Gas Panic and doing what? Sounds sketchy tome. Even though, it is really looking like he will be charged with premeditated murder if Japan has such a charge. Some Japanese are saying he had a cold, if not non existent, relationship with his spouse. I feel terrible for the victim, her family and this psychos wife and children. Also, I am surprised all their Facebook accounts are still active; except his is an older one; newer one was shut down. Also, I live 20 minutes from the Koajiro Bay. We went there yesterday, and placed flowers in the water next to where the police brought in her body.
He worked gaspanic Yokohama around 2003.
Actually, you are thinking of a guy named Bacchi McCurty that used to manage Gaspanic… this Gregory Gumo used to frequent Captain’s, a bar near Yokohama station back 2006-2007. He was a know-it-all control freak and he was fooling around on his wife with multiple women back then. I stayed away from him because I thought he had some anger control issues then, so all this makes good sense.
Well, no matter, the psychology going to be in prison for a long time. Only feel sad for the victom. I have to wonder why Gumo’s wife stayed with this bonafide asshole. She must have issues too or for the three kids had destroytef.
