TOKYO (TR) – Last year, the adult video (AV) actor going by the name of Shimiken garnered a tremendous amount of attention when he commented on Twitter (@avshimiken) that males in his profession are more rare than Bengal tigers.

Now he can say he tops that near extinct group.

At the Sky PerfecTV! Adult Broadcasting Awards held last month, Shimiken was named Best Actor, an award presented for the first time in the history of the 11-year-old event.

“It may sound like something every man would say but I am extremely glad to have won this award in its inaugural year,” said the 35-year-old actor, who made his AV debut in 1998. “Before its creation, this award was the kind of thing I wanted to embrace.”

Held in a theater in Shibuya Ward, the somewhat tongue-in-cheek event uses online voting by fans to present to present a number of awards to the top female stars appearing on the more than 10,000 AV programs broadcast last year on the nearly 20 adult channels on the Sky PerfecTV! satellite network.

Other top awards went to Mana Sakura (Best Actress), Moe Amatsuka (Best New Actress) and Ayumi Shinoda (Best Mature Actress). The Best Picture award was presented to a lesbian feature from Rainbow Channel starring Saki Hatsumi and Chika Arimura.

Industry estimates reveal that there are less than 100 male actors working full time. Shimiken said that he appreciate’s his lofty position in the industry.

“In winning this award, I will now view the excessive pressure that comes with it as a positive,” he said.
