CHIBA (TR) – A male inmate at the Chiba Prison died on Friday morning after he stabbed himself in the eyes with chopsticks, police have revealed, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Feb. 6).

At approximately 3:50 a.m. on Thursday, a prison staff member found the man, aged in his 40s, sprawled on the floor of his cell and groaning in pain.

The man was then rushed to a local hospital, but he died following morning of a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which is caused by bleeding in the brain.

In the cell, which he occupied himself, prison staff members discovered broken chopsticks. With bloodstains found around the man’s eyelids, it is believed that he plunged the eating utensils into his eye sockets to commit suicide.

“That an inmate has committed suicide is truly regrettable,” said a spokesperson of the prison. “We will endeavor to prevent a recurrence.”
