On October 1, Hokkaido Prefectural Police arrested a 17-year-old girl for allegedly stabbing her mother and grandmother to death at the family’s home in the town of Nanporo earlier in the day.

According to Shukan Jitsuwa (Oct. 23), the suspect and her 23-year-old sister worked to cover up the grisly killings.

“At first, it appeared to be a case of robbery and murder that had local residents feeling nervous,” a local news reporter tells the magazine. “However, those feelings shifted to a mixture of emotions after it was revealed that a daughter living in the house is accused of being the perpetrator.”

The second-year high-school student allegedly stabbed each relative as she slept in a haphazard manner with a kitchen knife early that morning. According to a report in Josei Seven (Oct. 23-30), the crime scene was a “sea of blood.”

Officers found the suspect’s 47-year-old mother, Kazumi Satake, on in a first-floor bedroom of the house with her throat slit, while her 71-year-old grandmother, whose body was discovered on the second floor, received wounds in seven locations, including her chest and head.

“The two victims lived with the suspect and the oldest daughter,” says an investigator. “During questioning, it became clear that she (the 17-year-old) committed the killings and was arrested on murder charges.”

According to police, the suspect, whose name has not been revealed due to her age, is believed to have revealed her plot on Twitter on September 25.

When asked for a motive, the girl indicated that excessive discipline was the reason. “I did it to escape,” the suspect is quoted by police.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on the day of the murders, the suspect’s 23-year-old sister returned home from work and discovered the bodies. The sisters then worked together to rearrange the interior of the house to make it appear as if an intruder had entered.

“Thereafter, the suspect inserted the alleged murder weapon and a pair of blood-soaked cotton gloves into a plastic bag,” an investigator says. “The older sister then drove the suspect to a park four kilometers from the house. There, she dumped the bag into a river. The police were alerted once the pair returned home.”

The suspect was scheduled to assume the position of head of the student council in November, a classmate reveals to the magazine. “The treatment from her mother and grandmother was harsh,” the classmate says. “Since she had so much work to do, she’d rush home after class. As well, in the winter, she was forced to shovel snow from in front of the garage and entrance of the house at 5 a.m. each morning.”

Though most news outlets reported that there had been no trouble reported inside the home in the past, Shukan Jitsuwa hears otherwise.

“In 2004, the girl (suspect) received protective care following evidence of child abuse,” says a local news reporter. (A.T.)
