HOKKAIDO (TR) – Hokkaido Prefectural Police on Monday accused a restaurant in Sapporo’s Chuo Ward of violating labor laws by attiring waitresses under the age of 18 in bikinis, reports the Hokkaido Shimbun (Sept. 2).

Officers took Akinobu Fukusato, 31, the representative director of GoGo Izakaya, and manager Takuya Kato, 31, into custody for violating the Labor Standards Act regarding harmful employment.

Between May and July, the restaurant is alleged to have knowingly employed 13 girls, aged 16 or 17, on a part-time basis to serve customers while attired in skin-revealing bathing suits.

The bust is the first of its kind in Hokkaido, police said.

GoGo Izakaya is referred to as a “girl’s izakaya,” whereby a restaurant offers a similar experience to that of a hostess club.
