TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Tuesday announced the arrest of seven suspects in a citywide sweep of video stores renting improperly censored pornographic DVDs, reports TBS News (Jan. 15).

Officers took Ken Tonomura, 44, the manager of video store Paris, located in Setagaya Ward, Akihiko Sakamoto, 30, and five other suspects into custody on charges of possessing pornographic DVDs in which genitalia was not properly censored.

Tonomura was allegedly in possession of 1,500 discs at the time of his arrest on January 7.

“The price of uncensored discs is low,” Tonomura reportedly said in admitting to the allegations. “I did it for the sake of sales.”

According to Nippon News Network (Jan. 15), Tonomura felt pressure from major video rental chains. “It was therefore necessary to offer underground DVDs that are not available for rent at other places,” he said.

According to investigators, Tonomura established his business 15 years ago. Over that time, he has amassed 60 million yen in sales.
