TOKYO (TR) – The head of a construction firm in Kyushu was shot in front of his office early Tuesday morning, reports broadcaster NHK (Jan.17).

At about 5:30 a.m., Takashi Kurose, 52, president of contractor Kurose Construction, located in Nakama City, Fukuoka Prefecture was struck in the abdomen and arm by at least three rounds from a pistol-wielding assailant aged around 40 and wearing black clothing and a white face mask.

According to NHK, Kurose was conscious upon arrival at a local hospital.

The Sankei Shimbun reports that Kurose’s mother rushed outside from her nearby residence after hearing the shots and found her son slumped on the ground. “He always opens the office at around 5:00 a.m.,” she is quoted by police. “Someone who knows his usual activities must have shot him.”

Police believe organized crime may be behind the attack and have launched an investigation.

In November, Toshihiro Uchino, 72, the chairman of contractor Hakushin Construction, was shot and killed just after emerging from a car in Kitakyushu by a gunman riding double on a motorcycle.

The offices of Kurose Construction are located in a residential area about 500 meters from JR Nakama Station. A woman who heard the gunshots from her kitchen tells NHK that a kindergarten is nearby and she has a concern for the safety of the children.
