TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Monday arrested two members of the Sumiyoshi-kai yakuza gang for robbing an office of cash and valuables and binding a woman in March of last year, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Dec. 5).

Officers took Shinji Yasuda, 33, and Motoyuki Sankaku, 32, both members of the Sumiyoshi-kai, Japan’s second-largest criminal syndicate, into custody. Two other non-members were also arrested.

“I don’t remember a thing about it,” Yasuda is quoted in denying the allegations. The other three have admitted involvement.

At 9:00 p.m. on March 12, the suspects are alleged to have broken into a home-office in Tokyo’s Ota Ward and bound a 68-year-old woman with tape. After demanding money from the woman, they stole a safe.

Approximately 3.3 million yen in cash and valuables were removed from the premises by the suspects.

According to police, evidence left at the scene led to the arrests.
