TOKYO (TR) – Eight Ferrari sports cars were among 14 involved in a massive pileup at an interchange of the Chugoku Expressway in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture on Sunday morning, reports the Asahi Shimbun.

In addition to the Ferrari vehicles, three Mercedes, a Lamborghini, and two Toyota cars were found strewn along 400 meters of a curve of the expressway, according to prefectural police. Ten people were taken to local hospitals for minor injuries.

Sports Nippon estimates the value of the vehicles to be 300 million yen ($4 million).

NHK reports that an amateur car group of 20 from Fukuoka Prefecture was en route to Hiroshima. At around 10:15 a.m., the lead car, driven by a 60-year-old male, was traveling at a high rate of speed and hit a guardrail. The trailing cars then proceeded to crash one by one in succession.

Eyewitnesses said that the rate of speed of the convoy was in excess of the speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour. The road surface was also wet from rain, according to prefectural police.

The accident closed the expressway for six hours and its cause is under investigation.
