Japan’s emperor hospitalized after showing signs of bronchitis, AFP says

TOKYO (TR) – Japanese Emperor Akihito was hospitalized Sunday after suffering fever and symptoms of bronchitis, Agence France-Press said, citing the Imperial Household Agency.

The 77-year-old emperor’s admission to the University of Tokyo Hospital came one day after his granddaughter Aiko was discharged from the same facility after suffering pneumonia.

Aiko is the daughter of Crown Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako. The crown prince will take over the emperor’s official duties while he recovers.

Emperor Akihito’s symptoms first appeared on Thursday. He underwent prostate cancer surgery in 2003. He assumed the throne in 1989 after the death of his father, Emperor Hirohito.
