Three days after the devastating earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011 the lines for gasoline in Sendai were exceptionally long. About an hour after these photos of the station were taken, it was found to be closed as it had run out of fuel.

The man in the third and fourth panels was the station manager; the kid sitting on the ground with the battery-powered drill was indeed the most junior man, if you don’t include the little girl (second panel) who was manning the cash drawer (and solar-powered calculator).

SENDAI (TR) – I cannot recall ever attempting to take gasoline from a car by sucking through a rubber hose. But on Monday last week there I was, standing in a dirt parking lot while contemplating proper tube diameter to access the tank of our Toyota Belta sedan in the town of Kawasaki, a small suburb just west of disaster-ravaged Sendai.

The magnitude 9.0 earthquake that occurred off the coast of this city in Miyagi Prefecture at precisely 2:46 p.m. three days earlier set off a string of events that the city and its citizens are still struggling to overcome.

One of the more crucial concerns is the shortage of gasoline. The destination for the fuel pumped by mouth was a van carrying a group from the local Sendai-Finland Wellbeing Center. Read more

Sendai’s sex-service clubs struggle to survive after earthquake

March 30, 2011

Shukan Asahi Geino Mar. 31Weekly tabloid Shukan Asahi Geino is likely not the first publication one might peruse for updates on the ongoing developments following the Great Tohoku Earthquake — that is, unless there is an interest in how the region’s sex-related establishments are faring.

In its Mar. 31 issue, the tabloid somewhat surprisingly reports that Miyagi Prefecture’s biggest adult entertainment area in Sendai is functioning on a limited basis.

The lifelines of Sendai, which has suffered greatly following the Mar. 11 earthquake and subsequent tsunami, are starting to come back to life. Shops have begun to operate as their services are gradually being restored. Read more

Three days after the devastating earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011 the Koriyama Junior High School gymnasium in Sendai was serving as a refugee center. The center had been used by around 600 people in the period since the quake, with many people returning to their homes during the day to try to clean up and repair earthquake damage. Food was in very short supply, as the authorities had not yet managed to establish a reliable logistics chain to provide even the essentials to refugee centers. “Milk soup,” referenced above, is simply warm milk.

Kawasaki shrine pulls plug on phallic festival

March 29, 2011

Tokyo Sports Mar. 30The annual Kanamara Matsuri parade, a raunchy procession of giant phalluses borne aloft on omikoshi (portable shrines), which are marched down the streets of Kawasaki, Tokyo’s southern neighbor, has been cancelled.

Tokyo Sports (Mar. 30) reports that the parade, organized by the Kanamara Shrine, had been planned for the first Sunday in April (falling on April 3 this year), but will not be held out of respect for the victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

In recent years the shrine has pushed the envelope on traditional Shinto fertility festivals, flaunting a float featuring a perky pink penis — nicknamed “Elizabeth” — toted by a team of transvestites. Read more
