Kumasaka takes TPG prize

TOKYO (TR) – Japanese writer-director Izuru Kumasaka on Thursday was awarded the Tokyo Project Gathering (TPG) award for his work “Secrets On The Table,” a family drama about a girl and her widowed father.

The award was the capper to the event, a four-day market (October 19-22) that promotes the international co-production of a number of types of visual content, including feature films.

Kumasaka, whose first film “Asyl: Park and Love Hotel” won the best first feature award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2007, received $20,000 in post-production services from Technicolor (Thailand).

TPG, which is affiliated with the Tokyo International Film Festival, offered a slimmed down lineup of 25 projects versus 34 from a year ago in spite of accepting 50 more submissions. Notable entries included helmer Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Ship Is Yet to Come” and “Six Suspects,” featuring the writing tandem of Vikas Swarup (“Slumdog Millionaire”) and John Hodge (“Trainspotting”).
